Hockey Training Program Review: Hockey Speed and Power by Kevin Meihem

Hockey Speed and Power is a fantastic training manual, and it’s really produced great results in skating speed, balance and overall power. Since starting training with hockey specifically in mind, I’m faster on my skates, and stronger on my skates (it’s much harder to knock me off the puck now). My lower body strength and upper body strength have improved noticeably which translates directly into harder shots and passes and quicker, more agile skating. This is an amazing training manual from the brain of a guy who has trained Olympic athletes and Stanley Cup winners. He knows what he’s talking about and I’d gladly recommend this book to anyone.

About the Author:

The Guide:

Age Groups:

Hockey Speed and Power is priceless for training both adults and kids. One of the best things about this guide is that it isn’t one size fits all. Kevin has tailored the guide into three unique versions for three unique age groups; 8-11, 12-14 and 15 and above. This reflects the three major stages where there are real differences in training.

Even 8 year olds can seriously benefit from training, but obviously the body of an 8 year old needs different exercises than that of a 13 year old. And by 15, most kids bodies are more than capable of taking on the same training methods that adult players use.

Offering one guide for all age groups would simply be dangerous, and Kevin has really shown his experience here by having the mindset to develop three unique programs to suit each age group.

The Program:

Hockey Speed and Power is a comprehensive training system that offers hockey specific workouts centering around core strength, lower body strength, upper body strength, plyometrics, agility, speed, proper warm ups, stretching and more.

The guide was originally designed for the Belleville Bulls of the Ontario Hockey League and was used as the team’s go-to training manual.

The program is broken up into easy to follow sections, and includes materials on both off-season training and in-season maintenance. The program also comes with a very handy 4 month workout calendar to help you keep track of your daily workouts and progress.

The exercises in the guide don’t require you to be a fitness expert, and many of them can be done at home if need be assuming you have some basic fitness equipment available. The exercises are all designed to make you a faster, stronger and more powerful hockey player.

Conclusion:

If you’re not training specifically for on-ice gains, or worse, not training at all, then you’re leaving a lot on the table. This guide is written by a seasoned pro with a vast knowledge of exactly what it takes to get into peak shape and reach your potential in the game of hockey. This is a fantastic manual for any player, at any age, regardless of their current level of fitness or skill, and following it will lead to noticeable improvements on the ice. Whether you’re a player, parent or coach, this guide is well worth its cost and compared to the cost of hiring a personal trainer or private coach, its an absolute steal.
